Q:Can I take birth control after the age of 35?
A: Yes; if you are not a smoker and the doctor prescribes a low dose pill.
It is also advised that you take a baby aspirin along with the pill. There is a risk of blood clots and stroke associated with taking birth control pills after the age of 35, but the risks are higher with smokers.
Q: How much calcium should I be taking on a daily basis?
A: It is recommended that a women take 1200 mg of calcium daily, but should also take 400 mg to 1000 mg of Vitamin D and at least 400 mg of magnesium along with the calcium. Most companies are making this combination of vitamins. Dr. Rawls has this combination for sale in the office.
Q: Do I need to take an iron supplement after menopause?
A: No, there is no need to take extra iron after menopause unless, the patient has a history of anemia.
Q: Can I still get pregnant after an abnormal pap smear?
A: Yes, generally an abnormal pap smear will cause no problems with fertility. Sometimes if the abnormal cells are precancerous the doctor will remove them with a procedure called a LEEP. This procedure can cause scarring of the cervix making it a more difficult to conceive. This is not a common problem.
