Gynecologic Surgery
Level of Surgical Care at Soundside Healthcare
If you and your primary care provider have determined that you have a gynecologic problem that may require surgical attention, Soundside Healthcare is the place to come for the most up-to-date evaluation and treatment in the most comfortable setting possible. You will not find better care in this county.
Minimally invasive or micro-invasive surgical options for the treatment
of gynecologic disorders, such as abnormal uterine bleeding, vaginal prolapse and urinary incontinence are always preferred.
Innovative surgery demands training, experience and a long history of competence. Place your trust in a physician who has been offering a wide variety of micro-invasive surgeries for a longer period of time than anyone in the region.
Micro-invasive surgery will help to insure a brief hospitalization and a short recovery. State-of-the-art surgery of this caliber would normally only be found at a large medical center.
When is surgery necessary?
After all other options have been exhausted, surgery can be the avenue to a more comfortable life. Patients who have had severely abnormal periods or pelvic pain unresponsive to conservative therapy are often delighted to leave these problems permanently behind.
Newer and less invasive surgeries for urinary incontinence have been life altering for many people. An optimal outcome from surgery is dependent on the skill of the surgeon, available technology, and standard of care at the surgical facility. The ability to perform micro-invasive and laparoscopic procedures is all important.
I had outstanding surgical training at Wake Forest University. Over the years I have made every
effort to build on this ability by staying abreast of new techniques, technologies, and ideas.
I was the first gynecologic surgeon at our hospital to manage a tubal pregnancy through the laparoscope instead of a large incision. I also performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy at Carteret General Hospital and was the first to use a tension-free tape technique to successfully resolve embarrassing urinary incontinence in women.
I have always made every effort to use the least invasive procedure possible and have been able to do so without added risk to the patient. On the occasion when an incision is a necessity, the patient generally ends up with an incision that is half the size of what is typical for most other surgeons for the same procedure.
Another area of surgery where I have a comfortable level of expertise is that of pelvic reconstruction and the surgical management of urinary incontinence. “Dropped bladders,” protruding rectoceles, and prolapse of the uterus are common in an over-50 female population.
The use of surgical “tapes” placed in a tension free manner has revolutionized the surgical management of stress urinary incontinence. These new procedures are not only less invasive, but also work better than any of the procedures that preceded them.
Outpatient management of urinary incontinence with tension-free vaginal tape procedures has been a part of my practice for about six years. Most recently I have received additional training to apply this type of technology to treat other forms of pelvic relaxation. These newer procedures are less invasive, work better, and last longer.
