About Dr. Rawls
I graduated from medical school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest University) in 1985. I stayed for my residency at this outstanding institution for four more years, training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The FACOG designation behind my name indicates that I am a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This means I satisfactorily completed the residency training program and went on to pass the written and oral exams required for board certification. Each year I go through an annual re-certification process to maintain that status.
After completing residency I joined a private practice in Elizabeth City, N.C. My practice extended out to the northern Outer Banks and all the way down to Ocracoke. I still have loyal patients that come down on the ferry to see me here. Longing for the southern Outer Banks brought me to Morehead City.
Early on, an interest in nutrition became part of my life and practice. I recognized that there was more to treating disease than just providing prescriptions.
After several years of study on my own, I attended an intensive course offered by the American Holistic Medical Association, and went to pass a certifying exam offered by the American Board of Holistic Medicine. This group is leading the way to finding scientific validation in alternative therapies.
Another group that I have become affiliated with is the Institute of Functional Medicine. Functional medicine most closely approximates the style of medicine that I practice in that it looks for modifiable causes of disease rather than just treating symptoms.
